Contest Rules

The freestyle contest is divided into two divisions, Pro and Amateur. Men and women will compete together unless there are enough women entered to form a separate division for them.

All competitor’s names will be randomly drawn on Friday, May 20th to establish the order in which they will skate in the Preliminary Rounds. Each competitor will perform 2 one-minute routines in the Preliminary Rounds, with a percentage of skaters advancing to the Semi-Finals. This percentage will be determined once we know the total number of registered skaters. Their highest scoring routine will be used to seed them into groups of 5 to 6 skaters. This seeding order will be used in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, May 21st. The lowest scoring skater who made the cut will skate first, and the highest scoring skater will skate last.

These rules will be reviewed with all the skaters at the Competitorsʼ Meeting on Friday, May 20th at the Cloverdale Arena.

Judging

The panel of 5 judges will consist of a Head Judge, Russ Howell, who will be joined by 4 other qualified judges. Each skater’s routine will be judged using a 100-point system with the highest and lowest scores being dropped, combining the 3 other scores for that run. Ties will be broken by using the skaters 2nd highest scoring runs, and if needed the 3rd highest scoring runs.

Skaters’ routines will be judged based on degree of difficulty, style, originality, and consistency of completing their tricks.

Contest Format

Each heat will feature 5 to 6 skaters competing in a Battle Format, with each skater performing their timed routine to the music of their choice. All skaters are to provide their own music for their routines. Your music should be on a CD disk preferably with just the song you are going to skate to on it.

All competitors who advance to the Semi-Finals on Saturday, May 21st will perform 3 one-minute routines, with a percentage of skaters advancing to the Finals. This percentage will be determined once we know the total number of registered skaters.

Each skaterʼs two lowest scoring runs from the Semi-Finals will be dropped, using their highest scoring run to determine their seeding order for the finals. Those skaters who advance to the Finals on Sunday, May 22nd will skate in this order. The lowest scoring skater who made the cut from the Semi-Finals skating first and the highest scoring skater from the Semi-Finals skating last. Amateurs will perform three 1 minute routines and the pros will perform two 1 1/2 minute routines.
