1. When did you start skating / freestyling?
In 1964 at age 10.
2. What appealed to you then and now about freestyle versus street and vert skating?
I have always been fascinated with propelling and creating momentum while standing on a skateboard. In the beginning I used to find the steepest hill I could, and conquer it by going UP without touching the ground. It's always been about creating my own momentum.
3. What are your favorite tricks or type of tricks?
Footwork Sequences. Finger Flips. Weird Handstands. Shovits and Caspers.
4. How do you feel about the freestyle "revival" that seems to be happening?
In all the different cycles of dark years that skateboarding has experienced during the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's, I have known that it is in those times that I need to practice diligently. I have always believed that it will get its due respect in the end, and that I will be needed to be there and show how much fun it is to freestyle.
5. Any word of encouragement for the freestylers that are still out there today or anyone thinking about starting?
Start small. Be realistic. Know your limitations. Don't try to fit it. Do what feels natural to you. Listen to your feet.
6. Is there anything you would like to add?
I'm glad to see that Bobby Boyden has re-emerged as a chief promoter of flatland skateboarding.
