TUFSKIN was a tar paper layer that some companies inserted into their skateboards in the 1980's. It was supposed to make the decks tougher, but the consensus seems to be that this technology sucked and only functioned to make the boards extra-heavy and more susceptible to Delamination, when exposed to water or prolonged heat. Variflex used TUFSKIN on the top and bottom surface layers of some of their boards, including the Variflex Stuart Singer Deck. Powell Peralta also used TUFSKIN in some of their boards, but they called it Boneite, and sandwiched them in-between the top and bottom plys.[1]
