Guenter Mokulys (born October 30, 1963 in Bonn, Germany) is a German professional skateboarder. He is an 11-time freestyle skateboarding world champion. He has participated in more than 100 competitions worldwide and is one of the most successful skateboarders of all time.
Biography
Guenter grew up in Dortmund, and currently lives in Berlin. Guenter began skateboarding at the age of 18 and moved to Munster, training up to nine hours a day. His training ground there was one of the first outdoor skate parks in Germany.
In 1984 and 1985, he was part of a training camp that had coaches and skateboarders like Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Per Welinder in Täby, Sweden. Motivated by this experience, Guenter decided to spend more time skateboarding.
After three years of training, Guenter won the 1986 amateur freestyle skateboarding world championships in the "Transworld Skateboard Championships", in Vancouver, Canada and the "Münster Monster Mastership" contest in Münster, Germany.
In 1987, he turned pro, under contract with Titus Dittmann's "Titus Skates" team. He continued to skate in approximately 50 other European competitions and show performances, until 1992.
Also in 1987, Guenter decided to write his first German skateboarding book. He wrote six books from 1987 to 1994. These were initially ridiculed, but they later became successes.
In 1991 Guenter won the professional division world championships in Münster, Germany. In 1994, the popularity of skateboarding fell to a low point in the US and Europe. With virtually no competitions taking place, Guenter quit skateboarding. Then in 2002, while in Cologne, he came back to skateboarding. After a year of training, Guenter entered and won the 2003 Freestyle World Championships in Würzburg, Germany. Another 50 worldwide competitions followed.
In 2004 and 2007, Guenter wrote more books on skateboarding and founded his own publishing house, Sir Marshal Publishing (SIR-MARSHALL-VERLAG).
In 2009, Guenter and his friend Eddie Hawk (a skateboard street artist) founded the "Skateboard Masters" show team, which has performed worldwide and has celebrated success on stage, in variety shows and on TV. Some major successes include "The Great Chance" (2013), "Got to Dance" (2014) and "To Tell the Truth" (2016)
In 2015, at the age of 51, he set a new record for being the oldest champion
to win the world championships at the 2015 World Freestyle Round-Up in Vancouver, Canada.
